Venerable industry pub joins ranks of HRTS Corporate Members



The HRTS is pleased to welcome the addition of The Hollywood Reporter to the ranks of HRTS Corporate Membership.  Representing the company as HRTS members are:

John Kilcullen is Senior Vice President of Nielsen Business Media’s Music & Literary/ Film & Performing Arts Groups and Publisher of Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter. Kilcullen is an award-winning corporate entrepreneur, brand-builder and business unit leader with proven experience in start-ups and turnarounds and direct to consumer revenue models in book, magazine, event, online, television and mobile media.
 
Before joining VNU Business Media in 2003, Kilcullen was founding member of IDG Books Worldwide. He led this continuous content company to over $240 million in revenues in 10 years. Under his leadership, the company created the For Dummies™ brand. He and his team took the company public in 1998, acquired Frommers Travel, Cliffs Notes and sold the company three years later to John Wiley and Sons.

Kilcullen has received numerous awards including Ernst and Young’s 1999 Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the 1995 Advertising Age Marketing 100 award, was recognized as a key influencer on Folio Magazine’s 2006 Folio 40 and min's "21 Most Intriguing People 2006.” Kilcullen was named a recipient of the Irish America Magazine Business 100 award in 1999 and 2003.

Kilcullen has been profiled in The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Investor’s Business Daily, and People, Forbes, Success and Selling Power magazines.  He has been seen on CNBC, CNN, CNNfn and popular talk shows in Australia, Canada, Singapore and the UK.

Kilcullen is a frequent lecturer on corporate entrepreneurship at Babson College’s School for Executive Education, on brand strategy at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and on cross-media publishing at the Stanford Professional Publishing Course. He is a member of the board of directors of Digital Music Group (DMGI) and The TJ Martell Foundation. His video, How To Create a Brand, was produced and published by Stanford.
       
Kilcullen graduated magna cum laude with a BA, Communications from Fordham College in 1981 and has taken executive development courses at Babson College and Stanford University.  Kilcullen resides in Pacific Palisades, CA with his wife and three sons.

Eric Mika is SVP, Publishing Director, The Hollywood Reporter.  Mika is based in Los Angeles and reports to THR Publisher John Kilcullen.  He is charged with accelerating THR's next phase of growth and link the paper's domestic and international strategy.

Mika is responsible for the general management of sales, marketing and editorial for THR, working with other executives "to drive our audience marketing, digital, production, distribution and ancillary products and services, including events, licensing and partnerships initiatives," Kilcullen said.

Mika joined the Nielsen Co., the corporate parent of THR, in January as senior vp and managing director, international, for Nielsen Business Media's Film & Performing Arts and Music Group, based in London. In that role, he managed THR's U.K. bureau as well as other global operations, established a news gathering and sales network in Asia and opened an office in Hong Kong.

An alum of the New York University School of Journalism, Mika regularly appears as an editorial commentator on international news programs. He is co-president of the international editorial jury of the Eutelsat Hotbird Awards and host of the event, which celebrates excellence in satellite programming.

Elizabeth Guider, Editor, The Hollywood Reporter.  With an 18-year tenure at Variety, Ms Guider most recently served as Editor at Large and, before that, as Executive Editor for News.  She has also held management responsibilities for Daily Variety Gotham, Daily Variety Los Angeles and Weekly Variety.  During her 25-year journalism career, Ms. Guider has reported on the entertainment and media industries for various publications from Rome, Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles.

In her new role, Ms. Guider will be the global leader responsible for the editorial vision and strategic direction of The Hollywood Reporter’s daily and weekly editions, digital content offerings and industry-leading executive conferences while overseeing its staff of editors and reporters worldwide.  She will report to Eric Mika, Senior Vice President and Publishing Director of The Hollywood Reporter, and will be based in Los Angeles.

With vast international experience, Ms. Guider has covered the entertainment and media industries throughout her journalism career.  She has served in a number of key roles during her 18 years at Variety, including Deputy Editor, Managing Editor and Executive Editor as well as an ongoing reporter.  She also wrote a weekly column called “Voiceover.”

Previously, she worked for Variety from New York covering the TV networks and the syndication business.  From 1986 to 1990, Ms. Guider covered the film and television business for Variety in London.  During her tenure there she was responsible for writing reviews from the London Film Festival, covering the Cannes Film Fest and the MIP and MIPCOM TV trade shows in France, reporting on the rise of satellite broadcasting in the U.K. as well as the media policies of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.  She first began contributing stories on media topics to Variety while working as a freelance journalist in Europe in the 1980s.

Ms. Guider regularly appears on industry panels and belongs to several leading media organizations, including Women in Film and BAFTA.  She holds an M.A. in English and American Literature and a Ph.D. in Renaissance studies from New York University.  She also taught literature and economics at colleges in Rome during her years as a freelance journalist.

Rose Einstein, VP, Associate Publisher, The Hollywood Reporter
Most recently, Einstein was vp advertising sales at Netflix. Before that, she spent more than 25 years with Reed Business Information. She will report to THR SVP/Publishing Director Eric Mika and will be based in Los Angeles.

In her new role, Einstein will oversee all sales and business development for The Reporter. A primary focus for Einstein will be the development and growth of key partner and customer relationships that will further strengthen The Hollywood Reporter brand across the global entertainment marketplace.

"Rose is an exceptional talent who is well respected throughout the industry and whose experience, energy and dedicated focus will drive The Reporter to new heights," Mika said. "Rose brings an intimate knowledge and understanding of the entertainment business in all verticals and platforms, globally. This experience will be extremely valuable in steering the brand through its next phase of growth. We're thrilled to have her on board."

Einstein said, "I am truly energized and excited to work with this iconic brand and the veteran team already in place. The Hollywood Reporter is at an exciting time in its history with its rapid digital growth and expanding global presence. I look forward to capitalizing on the enormous opportunities to extend and deepen The Reporter's brand equity."

Before Netflix, Einstein was a longtime Variety and Reed Business executive, most recently as senior vp publishing director at the Variety Group, where she oversaw the publishing operations of 10 daily products, three weekly products, 250 special supplements, 20 custom pieces and multiple online properties.

Before that, Einstein was Group Publisher at Reed Business Information, where she was responsible for Video Business Magazine and Tradeshow Week, among other properties, and evaluated new product opportunities including directing development of business strategy, financial projections and marketing and sales plans for those opportunities. Einstein also held other sales roles throughout her career at Variety, including managing director of sales, associate advertising director and West Coast sales director. She began her career as senior account executive at Daily Variety.

A graduate of George Washington University, Einstein has a bachelor's degree in journalism. In addition to Variety, she has held board and committee seats with the Children's Charity, Fast Forward to End Childhood Hunger and the Video Hall of Fame.
